Guide to Foreign Exchange Rates in Sri Lanka (LKR)
Understanding CBSL indicative exchange rates, commercial bank buying and selling spreads, and remittance guidelines.
💱 Buying Rate vs. Selling Rate vs. Middle Rate
When exchanging foreign currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, AED, SAR, AUD, CAD) in Sri Lanka, commercial banks (Bank of Ceylon, Commercial Bank, HNB, Sampath Bank, People's Bank) quote two distinct rates:
The rate the bank pays you when you convert foreign currency into Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR). When overseas workers send money home via Telegraphic Transfer (TT), the bank converts funds using the TT Buying Rate.
The rate you pay the bank to purchase foreign currency or when making overseas payments using a Sri Lankan credit card or debit card. The selling rate is always higher than the buying rate.
